about

Recorded live in Mwnt chapel, the oldest church in Ceredigion.

The thick stone walls gave us a quiet and sensitive acoustic space to record this song in. They must have offered precious sanctuary in their time for the fishing and farming community of Mwnt and passing pilgrims and sailors from the strong coastal winds and rain.

This track is a new arrangement of a poem written by Ernest Jones, a mid 19th century chartist imprisoned for sedition. The song has been recorded by multiple folk artists after the text was discovered by Martin Carthy in the Sussex Archaeological Society's library. We've set the original words to a new tune that we feel suits its dark yet uplifting mood.
